I am really not into the thought of replacing conventional medicine with herbal remedies. What I am presently doing is INTEGRATING conventional medicine with phytotherapy. I do this for several reasons, but to make the long story short, for me a disease process has two parts. The first part is the "active sickness" part-- it is a part of the disease process when we first experience the signs and symptoms. It is the stage wherein the immune system of the body is very active. The second part is the 'healing" part. it is the stage when the body makes up for the damage brought about by the illness. It is the stage when the body replenishes lost tissues and proteins. This process requires a lot of energy and a lot of enzymes and co factors. The second part is also very important since it determines the actual health of the patient and his or her resistance to future illnesses and stresses. It determines which patient will be the most likely to get sick again and again.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;During the first part of the disease process, we need symptomatic relief and conventional treatments like antibiotics and other drugs to fight off infection and control the illness. However, after the course of treatment, our body is in stress-- due to infection, injury and even the side effects of the actual medications. It is the stage when we need proper nutrition and supplementation to build and repair body tissues.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;This is what I do. I treat the patient with conventional therapy. Then, I advise them on proper diet and nutrition and give them supplementation. The element which serves as the core for chlorophyll is magnesium while Iron serves as the core for the molecular structure of hemoglobin. Thus this is the reason why natural buffers, fibers, latexes, starches and other substances from plants aid in the body’s ability to absorb nutrients and biologically active compounds.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Now you see the importance of a combined form of therapy. That is what integrative medicine is. Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. As I prescribed to her another course of oral antibiotics, I asked her what she was taking for her cough. She told me she was taking a herbal supplement for cough but she doesn't seem to get better. Since I am always in the hospital toiling night and day, I became curious over this supplement, which was very popular among athletes and dieters and decided to research on this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So I googled about Acai Berry and here is what I found over wikipedia:&lt;br /&gt;"The açaí palm or aqai (Euterpe oleracea) is a species of palm tree in the genus Euterpe cultivated for their fruit and superior hearts of palm. Its name comes from the European adaptation of the Tupian word ïwasa'i, '[fruit that] cries or expels water'. Global demand for the fruit has expanded rapidly in recent years, and açaí is now cultivated for that purpose primarily. The closely-related species Euterpe edulis (jucara) is now predominantly used for hearts of palm"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recently, the açaí berry has been marketed as a dietary supplement. Companies sell açaí berry products in the form of tablets, juice, smoothies, instant drink powders, and whole fruit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Marketers of these products, such as Monarch Health Sciences, parent company of MonaVie, make claims that açaí provides increased energy levels, improved sexual performance, improved digestion, detoxification, high fiber content, improved skin appearance, improved heart health, improved sleep, and reduction of cholesterol levels. Quackwatch noted that "açai juice has only middling levels of antioxidants—less than that of Concord grape, blueberry, and black cherry juices, but more than cranberry, orange, and apple juices." Furthermore, the extent to which antioxidants by themselves promote health is a matter of some debate. No credible evidence suggests antioxidants promote weight loss. According to the Washington, D.C. based Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) thousands of consumers have had trouble stopping recurrent charges on their credit cards when they cancel their free trials.  Even web sites purporting to warn about açai-related scams are themselves perpetrating scams. Apparently false claims include reversal of diabetes and other chronic illnesses, as well as expanding size of the penis and increasing men's sexual virility and sexual attractiveness to women .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As of March 2009, there are no scientifically controlled studies backing up any of these claims. According to ABC News correspondent Susan Donaldson, these products have not been evaluated (in the United States) by the FDA, and their efficacy is questionable. In late 2008, lawyers for The Oprah Winfrey Show began investigating alleged statements from supplement manufacturers who suggested that frequent Oprah guest Dr. Mehmet Oz had recommended their product or açai in general for weight loss."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hmm.. quite interesting, huh.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Further research on Acai Berry revealed that it contains the following components:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Anthocyanins&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Acai berries contain an extremely high concentration of anthocyanins - 30 times that of red wine. One of the many attributes of anthocyanins is their anti-inflammatory qualities. Studies have shown that anthocyanins can help prevent blood clots, improve blood circulation, relax blood vessels, and prevent artherosclerosis. But researchers have also discovered a whole host of other powerful effects related to anthocyanins, including antiviral and antiallergenic properties. One study even suggests that anthocyanins can inhibit cancer cell growth and even promoted cancer cell death.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.Antioxidants&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Antioxidant levels in Acai berry pulp are 50 times higher than mangoes, 10 to 30 times higher than red wine grapes, 3 times higher than blueberries and 3 times higher than pomegranates.&lt;br /&gt;Amino acids&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Acai fruit has 19 amino acids - an almost perfect essential amino acid complex (the “building blocks” of protein).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Protein&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One 100 gram serving of Acai contains 8 grams of protein.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4.Essential fatty acids and omegas&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;High levels of essential fatty acids and omegas are present in Acai pulp. There is 60% oleic acid (omega 9), a monounsaturated essential fatty acid that helps to lower LDL (harmful cholesterol), while maintaining HDL (beneficial cholesterol). There is 12% linoleic acid (omega 6), a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid that has also been found to lower LDL, while maintaining HDL.&lt;br /&gt;Dietary fiber&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Acai contains a significant amount of dietary fiber.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Trace minerals&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;High amounts of trace minerals (e.g. Co, Cr, Cu, Mo…) and macro minerals (Ca, Fe, Mg, P and Zn).&lt;br /&gt;Vitamins&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An abundance of vitamins including vitamins E, A, B1-3, C.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Phytosterols&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many valuable phytosterols. And a fat stomach diet has disastrous effects on our health such as higher risks for stroke, cardiovascular disease and adult-onset diabetes. There are numerous ways on how to remove fat off stomach however most of these ways are either too expensive, too depriving so as to make us go hungry most of the time, or too time-consuming so that we cannot add it to our daily routine.&lt;br /&gt;However recent studies of food experts claim that not all foods add up to calories taken up by your body when you eat. Recent discoveries have shown that there are actually foods that help loosen up stomach fat--- and keep it off!&lt;br /&gt; The foods to lose stomach fat in general, are foods which are rich in protein and good cholesterol. Whole grain differs from wheat or white bread because it is the type of bread rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Wheat bread is processed already, so that it is stripped with its natural vitamins and minerals. White bread is worse because not only does it lack vitamins and minerals, it also is not a good source of fiber and has additives already.&lt;br /&gt; Vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, sprouts, spinach and okra are recommended. Eat only minimal amounts of green peas, carrots, potatoes, yams, corn and pumpkins because they have “hidden” extra carbs.&lt;br /&gt; Beans such as black eyed peas and pinto beans also help burn fat. If you want a healthy snack option, why not try peanuts? Peanuts are inexpensive, rich in protein, contains no carbohydrates and eliminates hunger. Starting with the legs bent at a 45-degree angle, he then brings the right knee into the chest while extending the left leg out straight. At the same time, the torso is rotated so that the left elbow goes to the right knee, and then is switched so that the left elbow goes towards the right knee.&lt;br /&gt;2. Reverse Crunch&lt;br /&gt;In this exercise, the person lies flat on the floor with his lower back pressed into the ground. He then raises his legs into the air and bends his knees to a 90-degree angle. Keeping his legs still, he then lifts his hips up off the ground, and returns to starting position. &lt;br /&gt;3. Captain's Chair: This exercise requires the use of a tall chair without a seat. The performer stabilizes his body on the chair by pressing his back against the back pad. He then places his elbows on the armrests and grips the handles. He then steps off the footrests and lets his legs hang while holding himself up.
